2019 High School Volleyball Championship

The SCIAA hosted the High School Volleyball Championship October 3rd at Airways. This year’s contenders featured some familiar teams and one newcomer. The first match of the night was the AA Division with last year’s champion Kirby Cougars taking on 2017 Champions MLK Prep. It was a great match up between these two teams and a close first set with Kirby winning 25-21. MLK fell behind in the 2nd set losing 25-16. In the third set it could’ve been anyone’s game. The Rams chased after every ball and scored off of a couple great rallies but it wasn’t enough to take down the Cougars who became back to back champs after winning that set 26-24. Kirby is coached by Deanna Smith, game MVP honors went to sophomore Guya Acoff.

The second match of the night was a rematch from last year’s championship featuring White Station and Germantown. These two teams know each other well and have met up for the past few championships. Germantown started the game strong but cooled off a bit as White Station easily won the first set 25-13. The Spartans won the next two sets 25-18 and 25-16. Although Germantown fell in 3 sets they had a very talented team that made some great plays but they once again had to settle for the runner-up plaque as Coach Theresa Thomas and her Spartans won their 8th straight title for the AAA Division. The game’s MVP was senior Devyn Davis.

The final match of the night was for the A Division where last year’s champions East took on newcomer Hillcrest. East has a very athletic squad but that didn’t stop Hillcrest. The Vikings came ready to play and played the ball very well. The Mustangs kept attacking and set up several spikes to keep Hillcrest at bay in the first set 25-19. The second set went much like the first but despite their best efforts Hillcrest just couldn’t get the edge on East who won the set 25-20. More than halfway through the third set it looked as though the match was coming to an end but Hillcrest came back from being down 7 points and played their hearts out. It seemed to take East by surprise after playing almost flawlessly they let Hillcrest back in the game with the Vikings serving up several unanswered points. The Mustangs started volleying back and forth and from that point on each side traded scores. Hillcrest almost forced a 4th set but after an extremely great effort they fell 33-31. East went on to celebrate their second consecutive championship, their first under Coach Meah King. The MVP of the game was Condoleeza Black.

Each of this year’s winners won titles last year which is the first time all three divisions had back to back wins. The talent in Memphis is rising and each team including our runner-ups MLK Prep, Germantown and Hillcrest had some great moments. As always the SCIAA would like to thank the fans and parents who support these teams throughout the year. Check out post-game interviews on our Facebook page.

2019 MS Volleyball Championship

This year was perhaps the best season of middle school volleyball ever in the district. So many talented teams came to compete in the tournament and all were deserving of a title and extremely competitive. At Treadwell, the home team was unable to keep up with Bellevue and fell 2-0. Up next JP Freeman beat MBA 2-0 and squared off with Bellevue in the final. Bellevue was the site champion securing another return to the SCIAA Championship. At STEAM Academy, the Knights played a good Barrets Chapel team and advanced with a 2-0 win. EE Jeter played Lowrance next and the very talented Jets won their game 2-0 and went on to defeat STEAM Academy in the semi-finals in a tough 2-1 match.

On the large school side, Ridgeway played host to Germantown and won 2-0, they were also host to Cordova and American Way with Cordova advancing from that match 2-0. That set up the semi-final game between Ridgeway and Cordova. Both teams played hard trading sets and forcing a third and final set to decide the match. Despite Cordova’s best efforts they lost to Ridgeway 2-1 setting the stage for potential back to back wins in the Championship. The last site of playoff games were held at Snowden. The Green Dogs had a great season, earning a number 1 seed and played a tough opening match against Hickory Ridge winning 2-1. In the next match another set of tough teams played it out to 3 sets. Colonial and White Station who have met several times this season played hard every set. In previous meetings Colonial beat White Station including in last year’s playoffs, causing White Station to miss the Championship for the first time in many years. The Spartans came ready to avenge those losses and defeated Colonial 2-1 and were ready to take on Snowden in the semi-finals. Snowden was the site of some really great match ups with all games being decided by 3 sets. The Spartans stayed hot and were ready to make it back to the championship and did so by defeating the very talented Green Dogs.

With the playoffs complete the championship matches were set. First game of the night the #1 Roadrunners came ready to defend their title against the #3 Spartans who fought back to the finals after having a tough 5-4 season. In a close first set Ridgeway won 25-21 but White Station came back and won 25-18 in the second set. Ridgeway and White Station played a non league game the first match of the season and Ridgeway won easily 2-0. Tonight’s game would be decided by a third set and Ridgeway never let the Spartans get close again. Coach Watkins and her team went on to win back to back championships after winning the third set 15-7. The game MVP for Ridgeway was Cassidy Preston.

The Small Divsion was next with EE Jeter going for their first ever title against Bellevue who haven’t missed a championship appearance in a very long time. Bellevue despite their talent looked a little out of sorts and were unable to keep up with Jeter losing the first set 25-14. This was Jeter’s first appearance in the finals after losing in last year’s semi-finals. The Jets have been steadily progressing year after year and their hard work paid off winning the second set 25-17 and becoming the new Small Division Champions. Coach Daggs was led by a talented group of 8th graders including game MVP Janie Smith.

All four participants will represent SCS in the TMSAA West TN Sectional on Thursday, October 3rd. The Small schools will travel to Northview MS and West Collierville MS will host the Large schools.

Thank you as always to all of the parents, fans and supporters of athletics. Check out the post game interviews with the champions on Twitter @SCIAAFEVER.
