2019 Middle School Soccer Championship

The 2019 Middle School soccer season concluded last evening with a great match up in the Small Division featuring the Kingsbury Falcons against the Memphis Business Academy Execs making their first appearance. This was sure to be a good game given that both teams were #1 and #2 in their division. MBA was undefeated in league play this season with only 1 tie, while Kingsbury’s only loss was to MBA. It was a fast paced game with MBA scoring first early in the 1st half. Despite Kingsbury’s best efforts they finished once again as runner-up as MBA scored a late goal in the 2nd half to win their first title. The game MVP was Jorge Moreno, the Execs are coached by John Laubscher. MBA will represent SCIAA in the West Tn Sectional this Saturday at Crump Stadium.

In the second match of the night, Hickory Ridge and White Station met once again. There’s a lot of history between both of these teams and the coaches have a lot of respect for each other. The Wildcats were runner-up in last year’s championship but brought a group of kids ready to bring the title back home. This game was slower paced but the Wildcats scored first. A lot of credit has to go to their keeper because he kept shutting out the Spartans best attempts. White Station made some great plays and had a lot of opportunity but they just couldn’t get passed the hands of Oziel Hernandez. After another late goal, Hickory Ridge went on to win the Large Division Championship. As you may have guessed it the game MVP was none other than GK Oziel Hernandez. The Wildcats are coached by Eric Garner. Both the Spartans and the Wildcats will be playing in the West TN Sectional on Saturday at West Collierville Middle School.

Congratulations to both teams and all participants throughout this soccer season!

2019 High School Tennis Championship

The high school tennis season concluded after 2 days of matches. Day one Leftwich Tennis Center was the host for the singles and doubles matches starting at 8:30am. The high school individual competition was some of the best we’ve had in years. In the small division Brittney Combest of Middle College defeated Lia Leven of East to win another singles title. On the boys side her brother Boris defeated Jaden Wallace of Crosstown to win his first tournament match for his second singles title, he won by default last year for his first title. In the large division Sai Mummareddy of Germantown played a great match against Takuma Walter of White Station. Both players showed tremendous skill and sportsmanship but Takuma Walter took 1st place winning 8-3. In the girls singles bracket Taylor Frierson played a great match against Central’s Kai Wench winning 7-5 and on the other side of the bracket Farah White of Whitehaven  defeated Virginia Lang 7-5 to set up the finals match. Both players were very deserving and went the long haul. It was a marathon of a final that after almost 2 hours ended  in a 9-7 win for Frierson.

In the doubles competition East’s Zaria Boyd and her partner Shania Johnson defeated Douglas’ Lisbet Nare and Fatima Naranjo 8-4. Both doubles teams showed great sportsmanship after the match. On the large side, Arvind Ramesh and Neil Arora of White Station defeated Isaac Sanchez and Barak Mohammed of Kingsbury 6-0 to reach the finals. The other side of the bracket featured Sai Mummareddy and his partner Akhil Gedatti who defeated Whitehaven’s Deshaun Ward and Joseph Hampton to reach the finals. White Station and Germantown end up facing each other every year and its always a great match to watch. This year was no different with both teams playing hard for every point. In the end White Station took the lead and won the doubles title 9-7.

The girls large division doubles concluded on day 2 at Eldon Roark with Sydney Harris and Farrah White from Whitehaven defeating Taylor Frierson and Lilian Belford from Ridgeway to meet Central in the finals. Central’s Kai Wench and her partner Jetia Porter played hard with Kai stepping up in an attempt to hold off the dynamic Tiger duo single handedly but it was too much and White/Harris won the title 8-6.

The team competition also took place on day 2 with familiar opponents White Station and Germantown squaring off once again. Germantown defaulted in the girls competition so the Lady Spartans took that title. In the boys competition White Station won 5-1. Thank you to all of the amazing athletes who participated in this year’s tournament and their coaches who worked with them all season. Saw some great fan representation out at the matches so thank you to all of the parents and fans as well.
