This year marks the 44th year of the MLK Basketball Tournament. Coach Robert Newman remembers walking into his Coaches’ Office as a senior basketball player 45 years ago to hear them talking about creating a Memphis Basketball Tournament so they could highlight their players. The following year coaches across the city collectively created the MLK Basketball Tournament. Coach Robert Newman is going on his 30th year running the tournament which begins on Saturday November 22nd and runs through the Saturday following Thanksgiving. There are approximately 90 middle and high school girls and boys basketball teams from around the area in this year’s tournament.

WHITEHAVEN’S JOSHUA MCMILLON SELECTED FOR THE 2015 UNDER ARMOUR ALL-AMERICA HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL GAME PRESENTED BY AMERICAN FAMILY INSURANCE
On November 4, 2014 Whitehaven football star Joshua McMillon was honored on the American Family Insurance Selection Tour. He was formally presented with an honorary game jersey commemorating his selection to the 2015 Under Armour All-America game presented by American Family Insurance. Joshua received this recognition in front of family, friends and Whitehaven supporters. Joshua McMillon is a senior for the Whitehaven Tigers coached by Rodney Saulsberry. He is currently ranked on the ESPN 300 as the No. 4 ILB. He was selected due to his many achievements on the field and will get to showcase his talent nationally during the Under Armour All America Game. Until then, you can catch him locally as the Tigers take on White Station in the first round of the TSSAA play-offs Friday, November 7, 2014 at Whitehaven Stadium, 7pm.
The eighth-annual Under Armour All-America Game is slated for Friday, Jan. 2 at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Fla., and will be televised live on ESPN2. A three-month Selection Tour sponsored by American Family Insurance will visit the 90 Under Armour All-Americans to present official jerseys in front of their family and friends. The national American Family Insurance Selection Tour recognizes these top players as they follow their dreams on the gridiron and provides opportunities for competition, learning and personal development that will benefit them both on and off the field.

The 2014-2015 high school basketball season is set to kick off on Saturday, November 15th with the Annual SCIAA Jamboree. This year’s jamboree will be an all day event featuring a preview of what will undoubtedly be another stellar season of basketball within the Memphis-Shelby County area. Admission is $10 and all spectators will receive a wristband to enjoy all of the day’s action with unlimited pass outs for just one price. The first game tips off at 9am, no passes will be accepted except retirees, game administrators and central office administration. Let’s start the season off right, come out and support your favorite team and catch some of the action.
