2020 Middle School Basketball Championship

As the regular season of MS basketball came to a close, the matchups were set and it was time for championship basketball. The SCIAA hosted the 2019-2020 Middle School Basketball Championship at Wooddale High on January 18th, 2020. The SCIAA tournament is a qualifier for TMSAA Sectional championship. The play-in games started on Jan 9th at the higher seed. On Saturday Jan 11th,  the area tournament began with games all across the city. Teams from 3 classifications competed at high levels in hopes to win the SCIAA championship.  Class A girls and boys games were played by the same teams, Lester Prep and J. P. Freeman. Lester was crowned champions in both games as J .P. Freeman was the runner up. The head girls basketball coach for Lester Prep is Tavis Rutherford. The MVP for the girl’s game was Jakiya Wilbourn.  The boys basketball coach is Steven Terrell. The MVP for the boys game was Marlon McShane. Class AA girls and boys matchup was also played by the same teams, Bellevue and Lowrance. In the girls game Lowrance continued their dominant play as they were crowned champions. The head coach is Lance Williams and Tashawn Hubbard was the MVP of the game. In the boy’s game, Bellevue put together a stellar performance as they claimed the AA championship. The head coach is Byron Harris and Damion Cox led the bobcats with a balanced game and was named MVP. The Class AAA matchup for the girls was between Colonial and Ridgeway. The Colonial Patriots came out on top to claim the championship. The head coach is Mario Strickland and MVP Shamari Hamlett led the charge for the Patriots. To end the night the battle was between Ridgeway and Havenview. From the tip off to the end the game, there was non-stop action. Neither team led by more than 5 points the entire game as they both competed hard on both ends of the court. The game came down to the final possession with 2.3 seconds on the clock and Havenview with the possession. Havenview had to go the full length of the court. Coming out of the timeout, the ball was inbounded to 8th grader William H. Carver who dribbled to half court, shot and hit the miraculous buzzer beater to help Havenview win the championship. The Tigers are coached by Lawrence Myers; William H Carver was named the game MVP. The TMSAA Sectional Basketball tournament runs Feb 1st-10th.

2020 HS Swim Championship

The SCIAA High School Swimming program improved this year with the addition of 2 new teams, bigger rosters and the overall competition level. On the boys side, newcomer East HS coached by Hannah Raymond  was led by a number of top swimmers who placed first including Luke Parker (200 yd freestyle), Stephen Ferreria (200 yd IM; 100 yd Backstroke, ), Daniel Graham (50 yd Butterfly) and Chris Bailey (100 yd Breaststroke). East boys also placed first in the 200 yd Freestyle Relay and the 200 yd Medley Relay. On the girls side Crosstown HS, also new this year took top honors. Crosstown was led by their coach Eddie Walsh and a number of other swimmers who grabbed points in 2nd and 3rd place as well as first place finishers Molly Rachlin (100 yd Breaststroke), Tai Goo (50 yd Butterfly; 100 yd Butterfly), Cara Beretta (500 yd Freestyle) and Isabella Lomax (50 yd Breaststroke). Crosstown girls also placed first in the 200 yd Medley Relay. Our runner up in both divisions was Kingsbury HS coached by Kaitlin Manning, whose team placed first in both boys and girls 400 yd freestyle relay and the 100 yd IM with Georgia Vaughn and Oscar Montalban swimming.

The Most Valuable Swimmers based on total points for the season was Eriyona Pointer from Central HS and Brandon Mens from Germantown HS. Both swimmers finished their senior year with 317 points for the season. Eriyona will be attending Delaware State in the fall and will continue to swim. Brandon will be enlisting in the Coast Guard to train as a rescue swimmer.

50 yd Freestyle-(Girls) Eriyona Pointer, Central: (Boys) Brandon Mens, Germantown

Boys 50 yd Breastroke- Ivory Washington, Germantown

Boys 100 yd Butterfly-Lenny Sears, Crosstown

100 yd Freestyle- (Girls) Dottie Ferreria, East: (Boys) Brandon Mens, Germantown

Girls 200 yd Freestyle Relay-East HS

Girls 100 yd Backstroke-Sadie Kiel, East

Mixed Gender Freestyle Relay-Germantown HS
