The Executives from Memphis Business Academy are the new Small Division Champions for middle school soccer. They played a great game against another great team the Kingsbury Falcons. Kingsbury who had been the reigning champs scored first and went back and forth with MBA tying the game at 2 in the second half. With only a few minutes left in the game it seemed that Kingsbury had it wrapped up for another title after scoring to take the lead at 3 but that didn’t slow down MBA who kept playing hard and scored an amazing goal off a free kick from the sideline. With the end of regulation tied at 3 they played 2 more overtime periods with no score leaving it up to penalty kicks to determine the winner. MBA won the first kick and scored, Kingsbury missed their first kick and could not make up for it losing in the shootout 4-1. Jose Lopez was the game MVP.
The first half of the Large Division Championship featuring the Hickory Ridge Wildcats and Spartans of White Station ended with no score and had to be postponed due to weather. On Thursday both teams picked up where they left off in search of a championship. White Station scored early in the second half, followed up by a Hickory Ridge goal at the 16-minute mark. The game went into 2 overtimes tied at 1 and with only a few seconds left in the second overtime the Hickory Ridge keeper made a great save forcing the decision to once again come down to penalty kicks. Hickory Ridge kicked first with no success, White Station managed to get their first kick in after a block knocked it in off the high post. Spartan Goalkeeper Abner Fernandez, the MVP of the game blocked 2 more shots from the Wildcats ending their chance of victory. White Station won 3-2 on kicks claiming the first ever title for Coach Tom Pickering. Both teams will represent the area in the TMSAA Sectional this Saturday at Cordova Stadium.
