MS Volleyball Championship 10/3/2017 @ Airways

The SCIAA MS Volleyball Championships were played last night starting with an exciting game between Large Division powerhouses White Station coached by Kensie Zills and Hickory Ridge coached by Latresse Noel. Both previous champions have met in the finals before and played hard to keep the score close. Hickory Ridge won the first set 25-19 but not to be outdone the Spartans attacked and tied winning 25-23; forcing the third and final set. This was a true championship game, with each team equally deserving. These young ladies chased after every ball and scored digs to keep the ball in play on several long volleys but Hickory Ridge managed to edge White Station to go on and win their third consecutive championship with a score of 15-13. Guya Acoff was the game MVP. Both teams will represent SCS in the TMSAA Large Sectional on Thursday in Memphis.

In the Small Division Championship the Bellevue Bobcats coached by Chris Dease were seeking their 5th consecutive title. They met a new opponent in the finals this year with coach Antonia Tidmore’s Westside Wildcats making their first championship run. Westside and Bellevue both out of Area 1 played earlier this season in a three set match which handed Bellevue their only loss this year and first regular season loss in 5 years. The Wildcats were unable to match that performance last night losing the first set 25-17, and the second set 25-13. The MVP of the game was Amaurey Thomas. Bellevue and Westside will travel to Dyersburg on Thursday and represent SCS in the TMSAA Small Sectional.

The 2017 HS Volleyball season came to a close on Thursday, September 28, 2017. The Division A and AA Championships featured 4 new teams this year and crowned 2 new champions. In the first match of the night City University celebrated their first ever championship after defeating Memphis School of Excellence in 3 sets. Coached by Geneice Martin, the MVP of the game was Taylor Allen. In the second match up of the night MLK Prep took on Raleigh Egypt. It was a tough battle that went all five sets but MLK Prep held on and won their first ever championship. Coached by Blaine Ruttan, the MVP of the game was Dyrianda Johnson. In the final game of the night, the AAA Division was a repeat of last year’s finals with White Station coached by Theresa Thomas and Germantown coached by Julie Henry.
