In the long history of the MIAA, one of the most successful and entertaining Middle School Basketball City Championships took place at Riverview and Colonial Middle Schools over a five-day period.
Riverview Middle School played host to the Small Division City Championship Tournament involving 24 teams, 12 boys and 12 girls’ teams, from Area 1 and 2. The road to the small division championship ran through Corry Middle School Girls. The Lady Eagles defeated J. P. Freeman (41-36), Geeter (38-24) and Cypress (52-35), to claim the 2011-12 Title. The Most Valuable Player from Corry was Tesia Thompson. For the Small Division Boys, Lester Middle School laid claim to the City Tournament title. All roads led through Lester, with wins over Hamilton (63-60), Vance (47-40) and MAHS (58-27). The tourney MVP was Robert Washington of Lester Middle.
Colonial Middle was the host of the very competitive Large Division City Championship, which saw Snowden Girls and Ridgeway Boys winning the City Championships for the Large Division.
Snowden Girls completed their run through the tournament and the regular season undefeated. The team had victories over Bellevue (55-24), Cordova (59-19) and Hickory Ridge Girls (65-34) in the Championship. The MVP of the City Tournament was Rodrea Echols of Snowden Middle School. The Boys Championship had a most anticipated match of American Way Middle verses Ridgeway Middle in the semi-finals. The match-up did not disappoint fans as Ridgeway edged American Way 68-66 in overtime. Ridgeway defeated Hickory Ridge Middle 73-48 in the quarter-finals and Snowden Middle (43-38) in the finals. Kevin “Lucky” Cheatham, Ridgeway Middle, with outstanding play, collected the tourney’s Most Valuable Player award
