The Eldon Roark Tennis Center played host to the 2018 SCIAA HS Tennis Championship held on April 17th and 19th. The weather was perfect during the singles championship which had some really good match ups in the finals. In the Small division Brittney Combest of Middle College took home 1st place once again after defeating Lia Leven of East, a newcomer this year to tennis. Boris Combest of Middle College was winner by default in boys singles. In the large division, Taylor Frierson of Ridgeway won singles 8-1 after defeating Sarabia of Cordova and Kumpatla of Germantown. She squared off against Farrah White of Whitehaven who advanced after defeating Armstrong (Wooddale) and Vasquez (Kingsbury). Sai Mummareddy of Germantown defeated Mejia of Cordova and Todd of White Station to meet up with Marcus Frierson of Ridgeway in the finals. Frierson took on Banks (Craigmont) and Thompson (Bolton) before losing to Mummareddy in the finals.
Despite the wind and cooler weather during the doubles competition, the teams came ready to play. PCA boys were winners by default in the Small Division doubles and also took home the boys team championship. PCA doubles Totten/Gallison took on Douglass’ Yacob/Nava in the first round. PCA moved on to play East’s Leven and Boyd in the final losing a tough match 8-4. PCA girls were the default team champion, Lia Leven of East was named MVP of the tournament. In the Large Division, Ridgeway’s Frierson and Belford won matches against Southwind and Germantown to make it to the finals against Whitehaven. White and Harris represented the Tigers winning against Craigmont, White Station and Ridgeway in the finals 8-2. Farrah White was named MVP of the tournament. On the boys side, White Station’s Arora and Todd easily made their way to the finals after a couple of byes and defeating Kingsbury. There, they met up with Germantown’s Mummareddy and Lingareddy after they won against Southwind and Bolton. Germantown vs White Station has become a familiar match up on the boys side, this year Germantown edged them out to win the doubles and team championship. Sai Mummareddy was named MVP.
