November 12, 2015
As mentioned in pre-season meetings at the beginning of the school year the Sudden Cardiac Arrest Prevention Act goes into effect starting January 1, 2016. The TN Department of Health released the required forms on November 10, 2015. ALL athletic directors, coaches and athletes participating in sports whose current season continues through that date or begins after that date must be in compliance with this new law.
Copies of all forms should be kept on file with the athletic director along with the other standard requirements (i.e. physicals, concussion law forms, CPR cards).
This link to the TN Department of Health Sudden Cardiac Arrest Act contains all required forms and a link to the NFHS education course which must be taken by all coaches. A link for this information is also available on this website under Athletic Health Services.
Key Points from the new law:
· To inform and educate coaches, youth athletes and their parents and require them to sign a sudden cardiac arrest information form before competing.
· To require removal of a youth athlete who appears to have symptoms of sudden cardiac arrest from play or practice at the time of symptoms.
· To require a youth athlete to be cleared by a licensed health care professional before returning to play or practice.
